Harvey Milk

I’d rather not say much about “Harvey Milk” because that’s how it was for me. I was talking to Harry Cloud (Single Mothers) about music and other things and he asked me if I had ever heard of “Harvey Milk”. I immediately went onto youtube and typed in “Harvey Milk” and one of the songs it showed on the results was a song called “The Anvil Will Fall”. It was an amazing song in my humble opinion. I really enjoyed it. And with that song I became a fan of this “Harvey Milk” and listened to everything else I could find. It’s a weird band and I love it. So I give you one song. The Great Old Ones

 

 “The Great Old Ones” 2012 “Al Azif” is a 6 track album with an amazing song, one right after the other. The first track is the album’s title “Al Azif”. The song starts off great as it gets you prepared for what you are about to experience. Only a minute into the song and you are dragged into The Great Old Ones’ world.  The 7 minutes and 56 second long song has a power of its own proving that this band is someone to watch out for. The third track “Jonas” was the song that stood out to me first. Once I had heard this song I knew how I felt about this band; I loved them. Then “Rue D’ Auseil” was next and with this song  I then  felt honored to be able to have this album and band in my collection. Then I heard the fifth track “The Truth”. I truly love this song; it is now my favorite of the six songs. I highly recommend this album and the albums artwork is great throughout as well. I’m a fan of album art and it’s sad when a good band has weak or bad artwork or worse; when a shit band has awesome artwork. Anyway check out “Al Azif” it's mixed up with these two bandcamp pages.

Mouth Of The Architect

 

MOTA aka Mouth of the Architect is one of my favorite sludge bands. I truly love this band.  Though I didn’t know of this band until I watched the final episode of season one’s “Todd and the Book of Pure Evil” where Todd holding Sand Dragon; is sitting on the entrance steps to the school and says, “Destiny Sucks” and then the show plays a Mouth of the Architect song, and the song was “The Violence Beneath”.  An amazing song from this band, the power of the song as soon as it starts gives me goose bumps still to this day. And from there I listened to The Violence Beneath E.P. which included the title track. It is truly a phenomenal album.  

Then from there I listened to the other four albums they had; three full lengths and a split album.  Their first album “Time & Withering” from 2004 starts off with “A Vivid Chaos”.  It starts off slow and builds up to an amazing album.

Then in 2006 they released a split album with Kenoma.  MOTA’s only song “Sleepwalk Powder” takes over the album.  A seventeen minute and fourteen second long first track of heavy steady melody and raw sludge power that you not only hear, you feel.  

From there they released my favorite album of MOTA.  It starts off with Baobab. A heavy 10 minute long powerful intro into the brilliant world of MOTA’s 2006 release “The Ties That Blind”.  Then the second track is the best thing this band has done for me, “No One Wishes To Settle Here”.  For the first 11 minutes and 15 seconds it is just a beautifully dark flow of music until the vocals come in for the last 3 minutes making the song a heavy and beautiful masterpiece. 

Their last album before the Violence Beneath was 2008’s “Quietly”. 

This album is great just like all Mouth of the Architect’s music. My favorite of the album is “A Beautiful Corpse”. I enjoy this song. Here is  MOTA preforming A Beautiful Corpse live. Enjoy…

Interview with Single Mothers

 “Is there anything you’d like to say before we go into this?”

No

“Where are you from, how many member are in Single Mothers?”

I'm from midland Georgia. i am the only member. people have played with me here and there along the way, but only for very short periods of time. I recruit people here and there for live shows. as far as recordings, that is almost always just me. if other people do show up on songs, most likely it was snipped from a jam session. right now, Paul Roessler is kind of a member. he's the man behind the curtain. he helped me record Indian pussy. he programmed drums, played keys on some stuff and implanted various sound effects. i would like to have a band, but for whatever reason that has been difficult for me to make happen.

“How long have you been writing your own music?” 

Id say since i was 12. I'm 30 now. i didn't start recording my stuff till i was 18

“What are some of your influences in your music, such as bands, songs, books, movies, etc.?”

Well, i started out on guns n' roses and Metallica, and then moved to nirvana. then through nirvana i found the Melvins. and they were kindof the gateway drug so to speak into discovering all types of weird music. i also listen to a lot of phish and enjoy the element of improv and lack of boundaries in their jams. i discovered Harvey Milk in '06 maybe, And they have had a profound effect on me. i discovered liturgy at the big ears festival in Knoxville in 2010, they are amazing.

Also, mainly my influences are myself i guess. my personality, my experiences. i never set out to write a certain thing or do something in a certain style. its very unconscious. The songs kindof just write themselves. the only 2 consistencies id say would be my affinity for slow distortion guitar and improvisation (jamming).

“What was the first instrument you played, and how old were you?”

My parents had me take piano lessons when i was around 7 or so, not sure how old i was. that didn't last. i picked up the guitar around 11 or 12 but i thought it was too hard. Having to hold down multiple strings and all, so i switched to bass. i started playing guitar again when i was around 18 or so and still play both, but i primarily play guitar.

“Best live show you’ve ever seen, who was it, when and where?”

Well, the 2 best experiences I've had at shows were on psychedelics at the phish show in Denver in 2000, and their show in Irvine California, the same year. I saw rancid at the Ogden theatre in Denver in 2001 maybe. that was awesome. it was after the second s\t album, their heaviest shit before it all went south. I saw the Buttohole Surfers in Denver around the same time in the same place. that had a profound effect on me. total sensory overload. i remember i didn't feel well for like a week, But in a good way. a good corruption. i became pretty obsessed with them after that, and still love my butthOle. 

“What is your process when writing music, does the music come to you, or do you sit down and write from point a to b?”

The music generally comes to me. a melody will come into my head or a line. then i have to sit down and write it out or record it before i forget it. then once i get the idea out, then i start working all the parts out. do this 8 times. say this hear. make something up here. put a solo here. etc.

Another way is more kindof therapeutic journalism. writing things out when feeling intense love, anger, or mainly depression. and then trying to turn that into a song.

“What album are you listening to right now, like if you pulled out your mp3 player what would be the last song played?”

I've been listening to the essential Cyndi Lauder and Deftones' adrenaline

“What band would you love to see live that you never had, any band alive or dead?”

Hmm. it would be fun to see a trainwreck doors show. would be cool to see Hendrix, preferably up close in a small club. 

I'm still waiting to see Subrosa from salt lake city.

“What are Single Mothers plans for in the future?”

Be more proactive, stop being such a coward, embrace myself

Being a coward is a waste of time.

Another cover of Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs” by Krieg.

Krieg, a black metal band who’s released 9 or so albums in their carrier since the mid-90s. In 2004 they released an album titled “The Black House”, and the eleventh track was titled “Venus in Furs”.
