Harvey Milk

I’d rather not say much about “Harvey Milk” because that’s how it was for me. I was talking to Harry Cloud (Single Mothers) about music and other things and he asked me if I had ever heard of “Harvey Milk”. I immediately went onto youtube and typed in “Harvey Milk” and one of the songs it showed on the results was a song called “The Anvil Will Fall”. It was an amazing song in my humble opinion. I really enjoyed it. And with that song I became a fan of this “Harvey Milk” and listened to everything else I could find. It’s a weird band and I love it. So I give you one song. This one is called “Old Glory”.  If you enjoy it or if you don’t; go and check them out. They are very diverse with their music. Go… and explore...

The Great Old Ones

“The Great Old Ones” 2012 “Al Azif” is a 6 track album with an amazing song, one right after the other. The first track is the album’s title “Al Azif”. The song starts off great as it gets you prepared for what you are about to experience. Only a minute into the song and you are dragged into The Great Old Ones’ world.  The 7 minutes and 56 second long song has a power of its own proving that this band is someone to watch out for. The third track “Jonas” was the song that stood out to me first. Once I had heard this song I knew how I felt about this band; I loved them. Then “Rue D’ Auseil” was next and with this song  I then  felt honored to be able to have this album and band in my collection. Then I heard the fifth track “The Truth”. I truly love this song; it is now my favorite of the six songs. I highly recommend this album and the albums artwork is great throughout as well. I’m a fan of album art and it’s sad when a good band has weak or bad artwork or worse; when a shit band has awesome artwork. Anyway check out “Al Azif” it's mixed up with these two bandcamp pages.

Mouth Of The Architect

MOTA aka Mouth of the Architect is one of my favorite sludge bands. I truly love this band.  Though I didn’t know of this band until I watched the final episode of season one’s “Todd and the Book of Pure Evil” where Todd holding Sand Dragon; is sitting on the entrance steps to the school and says, “Destiny Sucks” and then the show plays a Mouth of the Architect song, and the song was “The Violence Beneath”.  An amazing song from this band, the power of the song as soon as it starts gives me goose bumps still to this day. And from there I listened to The Violence Beneath E.P. which included the title track. It is truly a phenomenal album.

Then from there I listened to the other four albums they had; three full lengths and a split album.  Their first album “Time & Withering” from 2004 starts off with “A Vivid Chaos”.  It starts off slow and builds up to an amazing album.

Then in 2006 they released a split album with Kenoma.  MOTA’s only song “Sleepwalk Powder” takes over the album.  A seventeen minute and fourteen second long first track of heavy steady melody and raw sludge power that you not only hear, you feel.

From there they released my favorite album of MOTA.  It starts off with Baobab. A heavy 10 minute long powerful intro into the brilliant world of MOTA’s 2006 release “The Ties That Blind”.  Then the second track is the best thing this band has done for me, “No One Wishes To Settle Here”.  For the first 11 minutes and 15 seconds it is just a beautifully dark flow of music until the vocals come in for the last 3 minutes making the song a heavy and beautiful masterpiece.

Their last album before the Violence Beneath was 2008’s “Quietly”.

This album is great just like all Mouth of the Architect’s music. My favorite of the album is “A Beautiful Corpse”. I enjoy this song. Here is  MOTA preforming A Beautiful Corpse live. Enjoy…

Interview with Single Mothers

“Is there anything you’d like to say before we go into this?”

No

“Where are you from, how many member are in Single Mothers?”

I'm from midland Georgia. i am the only member. people have played with me here and there along the way, but only for very short periods of time. I recruit people here and there for live shows. as far as recordings, that is almost always just me. if other people do show up on songs, most likely it was snipped from a jam session. right now, Paul Roessler is kind of a member. he's the man behind the curtain. he helped me record Indian pussy. he programmed drums, played keys on some stuff and implanted various sound effects. i would like to have a band, but for whatever reason that has been difficult for me to make happen.

“How long have you been writing your own music?”

Id say since i was 12. I'm 30 now. i didn't start recording my stuff till i was 18

“What are some of your influences in your music, such as bands, songs, books, movies, etc.?”

Well, i started out on guns n' roses and Metallica, and then moved to nirvana. then through nirvana i found the Melvins. and they were kindof the gateway drug so to speak into discovering all types of weird music. i also listen to a lot of phish and enjoy the element of improv and lack of boundaries in their jams. i discovered Harvey Milk in '06 maybe, And they have had a profound effect on me. i discovered liturgy at the big ears festival in Knoxville in 2010, they are amazing.

Also, mainly my influences are myself i guess. my personality, my experiences. i never set out to write a certain thing or do something in a certain style. its very unconscious. The songs kindof just write themselves. the only 2 consistencies id say would be my affinity for slow distortion guitar and improvisation (jamming).

“What was the first instrument you played, and how old were you?”

My parents had me take piano lessons when i was around 7 or so, not sure how old i was. that didn't last. i picked up the guitar around 11 or 12 but i thought it was too hard. Having to hold down multiple strings and all, so i switched to bass. i started playing guitar again when i was around 18 or so and still play both, but i primarily play guitar.

“Best live show you’ve ever seen, who was it, when and where?”

Well, the 2 best experiences I've had at shows were on psychedelics at the phish show in Denver in 2000, and their show in Irvine California, the same year. I saw rancid at the Ogden theatre in Denver in 2001 maybe. that was awesome. it was after the second s\t album, their heaviest shit before it all went south. I saw the Buttohole Surfers in Denver around the same time in the same place. that had a profound effect on me. total sensory overload. i remember i didn't feel well for like a week, But in a good way. a good corruption. i became pretty obsessed with them after that, and still love my butthOle.

“What is your process when writing music, does the music come to you, or do you sit down and write from point a to b?”

The music generally comes to me. a melody will come into my head or a line. then i have to sit down and write it out or record it before i forget it. then once i get the idea out, then i start working all the parts out. do this 8 times. say this hear. make something up here. put a solo here. etc.

Another way is more kindof therapeutic journalism. writing things out when feeling intense love, anger, or mainly depression. and then trying to turn that into a song.

“What album are you listening to right now, like if you pulled out your mp3 player what would be the last song played?”

I've been listening to the essential Cyndi Lauder and Deftones' adrenaline

“What band would you love to see live that you never had, any band alive or dead?”

Hmm. it would be fun to see a trainwreck doors show. would be cool to see Hendrix, preferably up close in a small club.
I'm still waiting to see Subrosa from salt lake city.

“What are Single Mothers plans for in the future?”

Be more proactive, stop being such a coward, embrace myself

“Any last words?”

Being a coward is a waste of time.

Another cover of Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs” by Krieg.

Krieg, a black metal band who’s released 9 or so albums in their carrier since the mid-90s. In 2004 they released an album titled “The Black House”, and the eleventh track was titled “Venus in Furs”. A cover of The Velvet Underground’s Venus in Furs.  This is the second post about this song being covered, but this is a black metal version of the song. Lou Reed and black metal? Enjoy…

Dead To A Dying World

“Dead To A Dying World” is a 7-piece band hailing from Dallas, Texas.  This band consists of Mike Yeager (Vocals), Sam Pruitt (Cello, Vocals), Leigh Ann Jensen (Upright Bass), Sean Mehl (Guitar), James Eidson (Guitar), James Magruder (Bass Guitar), and Stefan Gonzalez (Drums). Their debut E.P. was produced by Kylesa's Phillip Cope.  This 43 minute long album has easily reached one of my favorite albums of 2012. The power that each song contains brings each title to life in your head making this album one solid masterpiece of music.  “Concrete and Steel” being over 14 minutes long is the first of the three songs, and it takes you on a beautiful, dark trip. The melody of the song gets stuck in your head. At 4:55 the song breaks into a heavy flow.  Its raw power, brutal vocals, is only the beginning to this band’s talent.  The next track is titled “Stagmation”. Being under seven minutes, makes this track the shortest of the three. Starting off with a very black drone intro to the song then becomes the heaviest of the album. And lyrics like “Your gods, they’re not watching, their fables, they’re all dead. Yet we still keep building with blood on our hands. Stones stacked like tombs, monuments like withered eyes Pillars of smoke, columns of fire.” This was a band I can only listen to the album in its entirety. Last we have a song over 22 minutes long. “We Enter The Circle At Night… And Are Consumed By Fire” starts off with a soft melody like the rest but that’s ok, the buildup of this band is what shows how talented they really are. Less than a minutes in it’s a heavy flow of instruments making great music. I highly recommend this band to anyone that has great taste in music. “Scolding unconscious, behold wrath..”

Fields Of Locust

A band from Greece creating a masterpiece of an album. I can't wait for more from this band so I can jam to it also. "An Entrance Into Altered Mindtrips" is my favorite of the 6 track album. A perfect song to smoke to if that is your thing. The song is just a riff enhancer. It's all formed around this one riff and the band just gives the riff more and more power until it's an explosion of music. Check out their blogger Here.

Rotting Hills

Don't know much about this band. Don't really have alot of info on them. All i can say is this song is amazing.

Can not wait for their album this is a band that I'm very excited about. Four drummer, that's twice as many as (the) Melvins. Can't top that.. oh wait they already did. Here is their first show where there is five drummers... Enjoy the groovy tunes.

Single Mothers

Single Mothers... What can i say about this band beside amazing. I truly love this band. It's one guy making music that's fun. catchy, and heavy. Check out their albums. And if you enjoy them and want to explore further Here is a split album. Unlike other split albums this is two songs collaborated by Hopi Torvald and the talented Single Mothers.(The original Single Mothers). ARKHAM

I love this band. A hard band to find. Arkham released all their music themselves. A French black metal band. Enjoy. Click here for another Arkham tune from their last album."Chapter III - The Madness From The Sea"

Baroness - First/Second/Split

h

MIROIST

This UK band is one of those bands I felt more complete once i had their music in my collection. This three track EP is an incredible album. This progressive metal project based in London; matching the intense grooves of djent and progressive metal with the deep ambient washes of post-rock, post-metal and electronica lets my mind wonder into it's world. And there I am satisfied.

Drudkh

(headphones or very loud speakers are required, drugs are optional.)

This band is from Kharkov, Ukraine, from the label (Season of Mist). This folk/black metal band have only released amazing work. Drudkh was formed by Roman Saenko from [Hate Forest, Dark Ages and Blood Of Kindu]. Drudkh is a very private band, throughout their career they have not interviewed nor have they released the lyrics to several of their albums. Drudkh have been around since 2003 and their new album "Eternal Turn Of The Wheel" is an amazing album. It starts off with a great intro song "Eternal Circle" a 1:16 long song of sounds that give you the theme of the album within 20 seconds of this intro to "Breath Of Cold Black Soil" which is an amazing song. The transition from "Eternal Circle" to "Breath Of Cold Black Soil" is subtle but electric. Now for the next 10 minutes enjoy raw power of Drudkh. All five tracks are great from first to last. "Night Woven Of Snow, Winds and Grey-Haired Stars" is the last track of the album making "Eternal Turn Of The Wheel" one of favorite albums of this year. That is until Hooded Menace releases their new album (9/11/12) I highly recommend this album if you enjoy good metal. 5 tracks of pure gold.

And enjoy other albums by this amazing work of art. DRUDKH...Here

Coffinworm

This band fucking rocks. Doom/Black Metal. Love it. I will be doing a full review of their newest album later in the week but for now here is their "Great Bringer Of Night" from 2012 and "When All Become None" from 2010. Enjoy... I know i did.

Tim Heidecker "Gotta Be Brave"

MAKE

                                                                  MAKE

Make’s newest album “Trephine” is a great album all together. Each song brings something different from the last. The first track from the album “Ancient Tongues” has to be one of my favorite songs from this band.  A great doom/sludge song and from there the album takes a more psych approach. But the album stays heavy and raw.  “…And Time Came Undone”  is a great song to alter your mind and enjoy. This Chapel Hill, NC sludge band has power, melody, passion, aggression and makes this bands new full length my favorite album from this heavy fucking band. Check the album out here. Comes with two bonus songs making it a 9 track album.

 Check out their albums Here
And Check out the The Sludgelord's Interview

MAKE covering The Velvet Underground

First off Make is a badass band. They are raw and powerful. But what makes this band really great is their cover of The Velvet Undergrounds "Venus in Furs" which they rocked at. I love this song even more now. I will talk more about this band once i listen to their new album. About to check it out but for now here is MAKE performing "Venus in Furs"

Alaskan

 ALASKAN

Alaskan, a three member band from Ontario, Canada. I have listened to every song this band has available. They are an amazing band. Check Out Three albums and a split album here

And Check Out The Sludgelord's Blog on alot of Alaskan, which is where i heard the band from when they blogged Adversity: Woe, their third album here.

To buy shirt, vinyls of split with Co-Pilot and Adversity; Woe, check out their label's page here

But what I'm most excited for is sometime this year they are releasing their second album "The Weak and the Wounded" on vinyl. I will be buying that the day it comes out.

Baroness "Yellow and Green"

I want to start off by saying this is one of my favorite bands. I love their first 2 eps their split album and their first two full lengths. Baroness is an amazing band. I would talk more about them but I saw a guy in seaside, FL wearing a Baroness shirt so everyone must already know them. Going into this i have heard 3 songs already, and a 30 second sample of each song thanks to Amazon.com . Going into this I am really excited about The Line Between and the themes because they are going to be instrumental i believe.

Serious me is about to get serious.

Yellow Side One

"Yellow Theme" was an intro to "Take My Bones Away" and that 1 minute and 44 seconds of music (besides the first 10 seconds at the beginning.) made "Take My Bones Away" a much better song. I Liked. And "March To The Sea" i already liked its just a good song. Now "Little Things" was shit. I turned it off after 3 minutes it being a 5 minute song. And that led to "Twinker" a good song don't get me wrong but the lyrical melody of the song was almost identical to "Steel That Sleeps The Eye" from Blue Album, the intro to "Swollen and Halo" Over all I would say it was a good song other than that, i guess. The beginning of "Cocainium" starts off nice then 2:36 it turns into '90s Nu-metal. It gets better but the fact that you did that, i did a shit on that song. Next. (BTW I played the whole song and went back again). "Back Where I Belong" is not a bad song but i doubt i will ever listen to it again. The Best part of the song is 4:50. Now on to "Sea Lungs". Good so far. Dude it's Space Rock, I like (Or underwater I should say). I really like the guitar in "Eula". "Eula" is the last track of Yellow, side one of Yellow and Green. It's catchy and mainstream sounding.

Green Side Two

(BTW the copy of the album I'm listening to does not have the 3rd track on Green)
"Green Theme" is 4:22 what, damn 2 seconds off. It was almost 4:24. Anyway... The theme's were great in my humble opinion. It sounds like Baroness had fun making this album. OK up next we have "Board Up The House", oh is it a zombie song, hell yeah. Let's listen... This song sucks, the vocals are weak in this song. The vocals are very soft and plain sounding, It sounds like everything else. "Foolsong" Soft, quiet, plain vocals ruin another song. That's all I'm going to say about this song. OK... "Collapse" boring. Now on to "Psalms Alive" sounds like another slow ballad from our friends Baroness. Sounds like Sugar Ray, no joke. "Stretchmarker" I have no hope anymore so here we go at least "The Line Between" is next. It was a soft instrumental, i was pleased with that song. It was very good. It moved my heart. Bravo. "The Line Between" I've been waiting for this, here we go. At 3:27 is when this song gets awesome. Best part of the album, and then goes back to generic rock at oddly 4:20 they must have stopped smoking weed or something. I'm sad about this. Baroness is a huge influence to me in my own music so much i love their music. I will not be buying this album, it has a couple good songs a lot of Radio Friendly Pop Rock Bubble Gum Pop. Now the last song of the Entire Yellow and Green album titled "If I Forget Thee, Lowcountry" nice title. It's great so far, slow and soft like the album but its good. I liked that song. Amazing ending.Over all not an impressive album. I'm sad.

Sludge World's Birth

Hello, I'm Valdesmo and this is Sludge World. Where i will be talking about music. Most Sludge Related. But Mainly to talk about nothing but the music i enjoy. Nothing to take away from other blogs I myself follow, such as Sludgelord and so on, but i want others to check out bands that are not on those blogs because they are not some form of sludge. But all the music i do talk about on here will be Metal. Come with us now, on a journey through time and space, to the world of Sludge Metal.
